Illustration Workshops for Primary Schools
Inspiring creativity through sketching and illustration.
I’m Andy Slater, the illustrator behind Reyt Good Illustration. I visit primary schools to deliver practical, hands-on illustration workshops, giving children the opportunity to explore drawing techniques, develop their skills and discover what they can achieve through illustration.
My workshops are designed to make drawing accessible and enjoyable for pupils of all abilities. Through demonstrations and guided sketching, I break down the process into clear, manageable steps, helping children understand how an illustration comes together and giving them the confidence to have a go themselves.
Learning Through Illustration
My workshops focus on the process of creating an illustration, from looking closely at a subject and understanding its shapes and details to developing those observations into a drawing.
As a working illustrator, I share my own approach to drawing and the techniques I use in my work, giving pupils an insight into the creative process and how illustrations are developed.
I often use local buildings, landmarks and cityscapes as subjects, drawing on locations around Sheffield, Chesterfield, Barnsley and Rotherham. These familiar surroundings provide an engaging starting point for sketching and can complement projects pupils are already exploring in school.
The emphasis is on learning through illustration, with pupils guided through the process while developing their own drawing skills and understanding of the subject.
Encouraging Creativity and Confidence
Every child approaches drawing differently. My aim is to create a relaxed, encouraging environment where pupils feel comfortable experimenting, learning new techniques and taking pride in what they create.
The workshops are adapted to suit different primary school year groups, from Year 1 through to Year 6. By breaking sketching techniques down into manageable steps, I help children work through the process at a level appropriate to their age and experience.
Whether pupils are already enthusiastic about drawing or are less confident about picking up a pencil, the sessions encourage everyone to get involved and discover what they can achieve.

What Teachers Say
“As a primary school teacher, I can’t recommend Andy Slater highly enough. From the moment he arrived, his calm, friendly manner put both staff and children at ease, creating a positive atmosphere where every pupil felt confident to have a go. Andy has a wonderful way of encouraging children of all abilities, celebrating their efforts while gently building their confidence. His enthusiasm for illustration is infectious and it was fantastic to see even our most reluctant artists fully engaged and proud of what they had achieved by the end of the workshop.
What really sets Andy apart is his ability to break sketching techniques down into clear, manageable steps that genuinely work for primary-aged children. The workshops are thoughtfully adapted to suit different year groups, making them equally effective for children in Year 1 through to Year 6. Andy’s knowledge, professionalism and ability to inspire creativity make his workshops an invaluable experience for any primary school and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to colleagues looking for a high-quality visiting illustrator.”
